One man’s provocation is another’s motivation. When Switzerland face Serbia in Kaliningrad tonight, there will be added incentive for the three members of Vladimir Petkovic’s team who are of Kosovan descent. By contrast, some Serbia players have spent the past few days insisting that they will not be incited by opponents who, many of their compatriots believe without substantial foundation, will be attempting to goad them at every opportunity.

It seems an unlikely grudge match but anticipation has been building since the countries were paired together last December and Xherdan Shaqiri, the Swiss midfielder born in Kosovo, wrote on Instagram: “Hmm, I like this draw.”
