‘One of the world’s most important interpreters of lyric tenor roles’
Albanian tenor Saimir Pirgu releases his debut solo album on the Opus Arte label, Il Mio Canto featuring many of the greatest tenor arias ever composed. The release, which coincides with his Royal Opera House performances of Alfredo in La Traviata (16 January – 19 March), pays tribute to the art form he is dedicating his career to, the tradition of the great Italian Tenor.
As a protégé of legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti, Pirgu’s training in Italy has shaped his artistry and the repertoire he’s sung in all the major international opera houses. Il Mio Canto explores the Italian and French operas that great Italian tenors such as Pavarotti made their own.
This new album demonstrates Pirgu’s deep immersion in the traditions and practices of the tenor repertoire while bringing to each aria his own distinctive individual characterisation.
Born into a Communist Albania, Pirgu was made to study the violin after showing musical ability, which he did until the age of 16 when a teacher suggested he try singing, which changed his life. He then studied voice in Italy which is when he was discovered by Pavarotti who became his teacher and mentor.
At 22, Pirgu leapt to international prominence when Claudio Abbado discovered him and hand-picked him to sing Ferrando in Così Fan Tutte at the Salzburg Festival. This was quickly followed by appearances in La Traviata opposite Natalie Dessay and being invited by Plácido Domingo to sing in the Woody Allen-directed Gianni Schicchi in Los Angeles. Since then he has appeared across the world and works frequently with the greatest conductors such as Riccardo Muti and Maris Jansons.
The album release will be followed by a worldwide tour, including performances in Florence, Moscow, Vienna, Berlin and Paris.
