The UK has the honour of welcoming legendary Albanian iso-polyphonic supergroup Grupi Lab, for the first-ever UK tour of these 3000-year-old shepherd songs, unique to the region of mountainous southern Albania known as Labëria.
With their window-rattling drone (the ‘iso’), microtonal harmonies, unique vocal techniques, and deeply moving lyrics, when Grupi Lab sings, the earth shakes!
Albanian iso-polyphony, known in Albania as Këngë Labë, is protected by UNESCO as a miracle of human heritage.
Grupi Lab are a supergroup of legendary singers of southern Albanian polyphony or Këngë Labe. Led by Golik Jaupi, awarded the title of ‘Artist of the People’ during the country’s 50-year communist dictatorship. The powerful drone and astonishingly varied vocal roles have to be heard to be believed; when Grupi Lab sing, the earth shakes.
