A Bristol teenager who spoke very little English when he came to the UK two years ago has scooped a string of top GCSE grades.
Stiven Bregu left Albania in the summer of 2015 for family reasons and settled in Bristol – joining St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School the following October.
The 16-year-old has achieved a grade 8 in maths, an A grade in further maths, Bs in physics and chemistry and Cs in biology and history and plans to stay on at the school’s sixth form to study for A-levels in maths, biology, chemistry and physics.
“I am really pleased with my results. I am in two minds whether to study medicine or engineering at university,” said the teenager, who lives in Bristol.
“The last two years have been challenging but manageable meeting different people, different languages and different cultures.
“In the beginning it was hard but I got with it. School was so different to how things work in Albania.
“I did speak some English when I came to Britain but the way the teachers teach English in Albania is different to the way we speak and write English here so I started again fresh.”
