The appeal of a beach holiday needs no explanation, but there are alternatives to busy, sun-drenched Mediterranean favourites.
Sandwiched between Greece and Montenegro, Albania has long stood in the shadows of its neighbours in spite of its miles of golden beaches, turquoise water and quiet bays. EasyJet will launch direct flights from Gatwick to the capital Tirana from 1 May, with returns starting at £85 (easyJet.com).
The city is less than an hour from the coast, where highlights include the 10km Durres beach and family-friendly Spille. Further south is the azure Albanian Riviera that trickles down towards Corfu.
