Rita Ora’s gorgeous mother Vera Sahatciu was one of the honorees during VH1’s Dear Mama special, which aired Sunday, May 8 at 9 PM/8c. And in this sneak-peek clip of the British singer’s speech, you learn a little bit more about Sahatciu, who spent six years getting re-credited as a psychiatrist when she moved her family from Kosovo to London.

“Think about that: To know that you’re already more qualified than maybe some of the students next to you, but still you have to relearn everything–including a language–just to prove yourself,” Ora said about her mother.

“Think about that: To know that you’re already more qualified than maybe some of the students next to you, but still you have to relearn everything–including a language–just to prove yourself,” Ora said about her mother.

That’s impressive enough, but here’s the kicker: Sahatciu did all of this while battling–and eventually beating–breast cancer. “But mom, you never wavered. You just rolled up your sleeves, went to school, picked up a job to help dad and support our family,” Ora said.

It’s a very emotional moment that almost got the best of Ora. Both she and her mum were holding back tears during the speech, but they managed to stay dry–we think. “We said we weren’t ’gonna cry,” Ora said. But no one would judge them if they did!
