We would like to invite you to participate in the Refugee Council’s Football Tournament taking place on Saturday 25th June 2011 (9am: Registration, 10am: Start, 4pm:End).
Venue: Douglas Eyre Sports Centre, Coppermill Lane, Walthamstow, London E17 7HE
Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.
This 5-a-side tournament will bring together young people of refugee and non-refugee background as well as adults from organisations working in the sector to raise awareness of refugee issues and encourage community engagement through sport.
As adults and young people will be participating in the tournament the all youth players must be 16 years and over. Although the tournament is 7-a-side teams can bring up to 7 players to act as substitutes.
The event is organised by the Refugee Council, the leading independent human rights charity working with refugees in the UK, in partnership with the London Playing Fields Foundation, the leading body for the protection, provision and promotion of playing fields in London, and is funded through the FA’s Small Sided Football Development Fund.
The tournament is part of the All Nations Football Programme delivered by The London Playing Fields Foundation since 2001. There will be the opportunity for teams taking part in the tournament to register for the London Communities Football League (run as part of the programme) which begins in October. This is an 11-a-side weekly league aimed at establishing new community football clubs and is an excellent introduction to affiliated football.
There is no cost in entering this tournament but as a charitable event raising income is also important. We are asking teams who are able, to make a donation to the Refugee Council or to see if they and their team can engage in fundraising, however this is not a pre-requisite for being involved in the event.
On the day there will also be an exhibition area where organisations and projects can display literature about their work and also engage with people on the day.
As places for teams are limited, please confirm whether you would like to participate by Wednesday 15th June.
