For the first time, Kosovo is eligible to submit a film to the Oscars in the foreign-language film category, and will be proposing “Three Windows and a Hanging.”

“Three Windows and a Hanging,” directed by Isa Qosja and written by Zymber Kelmendi, follows the story of a school teacher, who is driven by her conscience and need to restore dignity to sit down with an international journalist and reveal her rape at the hands of Serbian forces. When the news is published, male villagers grow suspicious and stigmatize her for speaking out.

The film was financed by Kosovo Cinematography Center and produced by CMB. The world premiere was held at the Sarajevo Film Festival and the film won the Cineuropa award.

The deadline for submitting foreign-language candidates is Oct. 1. The nominations will be announced Jan. 15 and the awards will be held Feb. 22.
