A 17-year-old Albanian British originally from Kosovo hopes his place at Cambridge University will one day allow him to tackle the unemployment levels of his once “war-torn” home town.

Arber Beciri, who came over to Britain when he was a baby, has won a place at King’s College to study economics after securing A*s in maths and further maths, an A in economics and a B in chemistry.

The Haverstock School pupil, from Malden Road in Chalk Farm, said: “My main motivation is to go back to Baks in Kosovo one day to my war-torn village. It has already transformed into a little vibrant town, but unemployment is still very high and the economy is not doing that well.

“Maybe one day I can help.”

He added: “This has come as a bit of a surprise because my aim was to get to the London School of Economics so I’m feeling really relieved.”
