Mr Ditmir Bushati is the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania since September 2013. Mr. Bushati was first elected as a Member of Parliament from the Socialist Party for the Tirana District in 2009, and re-elected in the June 23, 2013 parliamentary elections for the same district. As an MP, he chaired the Parliamentary Committee for European Integration (2011-2013) and was a member of the Joint EU-Albania Parliamentary Committee (2009-2013). In November 2011, Mr. Bushati was elected Member of the Steering Committee of the Socialist Party of Albania. Prior to his political career Mr. Ditmir Bushati was a civil society leader and a Founding Director of the European Movement in Albania. He then served as Director of Legal Approximation at the Albanian Ministry of European Integration. Mr. Bushati has lectured on European Law and the EU enlargement process at different institutions and universities in Albania and Kosovo. He has published numerous scientific papers and articles in areas related to the EU enlargement process, public international law and European law.
Dr Arjan Gjonca who will be chairing this event is Senior Lecturer in Demography at the LSE. He is a member of different professional bodies, including International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, British Society for Population Studies (BSPS), European Association for Population Studies, Population Association of America, and many more. He was the Honorary Secretary of the BSPS from 2001-2004, and a member of the council since 1997. He also sits in different editorial boards of population journals. His main areas of interests and research are: Health Transition in Developing Countries; Ageing in Developed and Developing Societies; Family and Fertility in Developed Societies; Demography of the Balkans (with particular focus Albania); Gender Differences in Mortality. Arjan has acted as an adviser to different international organisations and national governments, including the World Bank, UNFPA, UNDP and the Albanian government. His recent works include the paradox of mortality transition in Albania, Gender differences in survival and old age; Explaining fertility change in Albania.
